What we do

Five areas of work, and themes that run through all of them. Each one starts with what a community tells us it needs.

Women speak at a community meeting under a tree

Gender equality and social inclusion

We challenge harmful norms, discrimination and power imbalances, and empower women, girls, youth, persons with disabilities and marginalised groups to exercise their rights and take part fully in society. We tackle gender-based violence and the structural barriers behind it.

Guided by "leave no one behind, leave no one out and leave no one unsafe", we use participatory and transformative approaches such as the Gender Model Family to build inclusive, safe and equal communities.

Economic empowerment and livelihoods

Many young people finish an apprenticeship but cannot afford the tools to start earning. We provide vocational and business training, financial literacy, start-up equipment and Village Savings and Loans Associations, and link young people to financial and state institutions for further support.

Agriculture, food and nutrition security

We work to raise agricultural productivity, build sustainable food systems and improve nutrition by promoting innovative farming practices, fair access to food and resilient supply chains, so fewer households in our communities go hungry.

Education and human development

We support inclusive and equal access to quality education and lifelong learning, especially for girls and vulnerable children. That means community engagement against discrimination in girls' education, support for school buildings, learning materials, and advocacy for policy change.

Health, water, sanitation and hygiene

We work with households, schools and health facilities to improve access to safe water, sanitation, hygiene education and health information in underserved rural communities, putting women, children, adolescent girls and persons with disabilities first and building community ownership of the services.

Across all our work

Two cross-cutting themes shape every project, whatever its focus.

Environment and climate resilience

We build climate resilience and environmental care into every programme. We help communities adapt to climate risks, promote practices that cut greenhouse gas emissions, and design our work to protect natural resources and respect community rights.

Civic participation and peacebuilding

We help women, youth, persons with disabilities and marginalised groups take part in community and public decisions. We strengthen community voice, leadership, accountability and dialogue, and support peaceful ways to prevent and resolve conflict.

Our objectives

Three strategic objectives set the direction for our programmes.

  1. Climate-resilient livelihoods and economic empowerment

Climate-resilient agriculture, agribusiness, vocational skills, entrepreneurship and better access to finance for women, persons with disabilities and youth.

  2. Quality education and WASH for marginalised children

Learning materials, school buildings and WASH facilities, with community advocacy to reduce gender and disability barriers to education.

  3. Gender equality, climate justice and civic participation

Leadership and civic engagement training, climate adaptation and gender rights advocacy, so women and young people take part in local governance and decisions.
