Youth Employment and Skills Project, Phase I

When
August 2023 to June 2024
Where
5 communities, West Mamprusi Municipality, North East Region
Funded by
Vibrant Village Foundation
Budget
USD 10,000

The problem

Youth unemployment, limited access to finance and too few resources to start a business were driving young people from five communities in West Mamprusi to migrate.

Many had completed apprenticeships in weaving, sewing and hairdressing but could not afford the equipment to put their skills to work.

What we did

  • Mobilised 270 young people into groups and assessed their skills.
  • Trained 150 young people in group dynamics, leadership, advocacy and lobbying.
  • Gave 29 young women start-up equipment: sewing machines, hair dryers, washing sinks, and weaving machines and thread. Their relatives attended the handover as witnesses.
  • Opened discussions with financial institutions so the groups could access savings and loan products.
