Rukaya Zankariya is 36, married with four children, and lives in Sayoo.
She depended on her husband for all her needs, and this constantly brought conflict between them. Her old sewing machine broke down so often that she was out of work most of the time.
Rights Action Ghana gave Rukaya a new sewing machine, and she joined the Village Savings and Loans Association that RAG set up in Kukua.
Today Rukaya trains nine apprentices, has started a small soap business on the side, and contributes regularly to her savings group, which lets her take small loans when she needs them.
I no longer depend entirely on my husband for my basic needs. This has brought peace and understanding into our home. We no longer argue about money, and our relationship has improved greatly. I feel empowered, self-reliant and hopeful, and I still dream of expanding my soap business with additional support.
